Is Daniel Jones “The Guy” for the Giants?

Barring his performance this season, Daniel Jones has been a mediocre Quarterback throughout his career for the New York Giants. After being selected 6th in the 2019 NFL draft, Jones would have 3 under .500 seasons with the Giants. It’s tough to assign the blame all on Jones, as he would struggle under a horrific offensive line, and with inexperienced or mediocre receivers.

This season under a new head coach, Brian Daboll, and a new offensive coordinator, it appears that Jones has improved drastically and with the Giants standing at 9-6-1, they clinched their first playoff spot since 2016. The Giants started the season strong at 6-1, but have since struggled due to injuries and a lack of talent at the wide receiver position. Considering these circumstances it’s impressive that Jones was able to lead the team to a solid record.  This season Jones has passed for 3205 yards, 15 TDs, and thrown 5 interceptions. Jones has a QBR of 60.4 and averages 200.3 yards per game. When compared to previous seasons, it’s clear that Jones is more efficient with the ball, and turns the ball over less.

When comparing Jones’ 2022 season to another QB taken in the first round of the 2019 draft, Kyler Murray, Jones is clearly the more efficient QB. It appears that Murray has regressed since 2021, and it is unclear whether this trend will continue in future seasons. However, at least in 2022, it is clear that Jones has been the better QB and the best QB in his draft class.

Overall, it is safe to assume that Jones has improved over the last season and that he has a future with the Giants. Jones is in the 4th and final year of his contract, right now it appears that Jones will be resigning along with the Giants 2 time pro-bowl running back Saquon Barkley.
